Me and my Big Ideas!
Trying to maintain control of a creative mind is like trying to train a cat... you really have to work at it. I've come up with a few 'big ideas' that I initially thought were great, only to realize later that the only thing great about them was the amount of time and effort they sucked up.
For instance, my attempt to implement a 'make an offer' button on so many items. This was a bad idea for a number of reasons, but mostly because it just simply unnecessary. Period.
Not to mention the fact that it is not at all appealing to customers. This is an educated guess on my part, based on the number of people who actually used it. In short, that feature will be removed from current listings and will not be used again in the future. Lesson learned.
Another fantastic flub was the introduction of the 'FS' at the end of the SKU or item number, indicating free shipping. This did not make things easier...at all. Again, it only added more work for me (adding it to each item SKU with free shipping) and meant nothing to customers. (Anyone who hadn't read the previously published blog post about this very thing wondered what the FS stood for. Can you say 'Waste of time'?) While I am not about to go through and remove the current items with FS in the number, I will not be using this anymore either.
The initial goal of my opening the shop on this website was to be able to eventually get away from e-bay. If I had to make a prediction based on events up to this point, I would say that's not going to happen. That doesn't mean I am giving up just yet, but I am considering a few options.
First and foremost is what I concentrate on selling here. On e-bay, I deal with a large variety of items and doing that on two separate venues is ridiculous. I would like to use this shop primarily for vintage buttons, sewing notions, trims, and miscellaneous supplies, along with handmade items.
Re-organizing for this would include the expansion of certain shop categories like sewing notions and supplies, while condensing most of the existing categories. I will also be slowly moving items in these condensed categories to the other venue, in order to eventually eliminate them completely.
