I remember shimmying under the Christmas tree and lying there on my back, gazing up through the boughs as soon as the lights were on. It was the most magical place I'd ever been; like looking at millions of tiny colored stars. Mom & Dad would play Christmas music on the record player and I would stay there and let my imagination run rampant, which it was quite good at.
I dreamed of far away places covered in snow where my Saint Bernard, Heidi, and I could romp and play without worrying about sticking to the confines of our own yard. I dreamed of flying on wings all my own among all of the tiny multi-colored stars, and of everyone on earth being happy and having peace in their hearts.
When I began to think about all of the Christmas memories I hold dear, I realized that not one of them had to do with money or gifts... not a single one. Lying under the lit tree, driving all around looking at Christmas lights in the evenings, singing Christmas songs, being with family...these are the things I remember.
This year our family decided to go old school for Christmas. Gifts must be handmade or 'recycled' (i.e.; vintage) and we aren't to go out 'hunting' for certain things. Because we all love vintage things, there are plenty of opportunities throughout the year to pick something up if it happens to remind us of someone. Avoiding the big commercial conglomeration that Christmas had at some point become has allowed me to think about the simplicity we used to enjoy so much.
We put up a small tree and the nativity. (Because I put colored lights on the tree this year, I'm pretty sure hubs didn't notice that all of the decorations are red, white and blue with a dash of clear and one special wooden ornament... teeheehee!) We purchased the nativity set a few years ago from a gentleman that hand makes them. He even made the miniature bales of hay and a ladder to the loft (which I don't use because it blocks the view a little).
Thank you all so very much for your support and friendship this year! I wish you all a very merry Christmas and happy new year! God Bless!
